Integrated PhD Programme
The Integrated PhD program is a six-year program designed for students who are admitted after completing their Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics, Engineering, or related fields. Students who already possess a Master’s degree or who will obtain a Master’s degree at the time of admission are not eligible for this program. These students may want to consider the PhD programs that we offer. The program will consist of rigorous coursework in the first two years, followed by research supervised by a faculty member at CAM. The Integrated PhD programme comprises of three stage
Years 1 and 2: The student undergoes rigorous training in Master’s level mathematics with a strong emphasis on Analysis, Probability, and theoretical and numerical study of PDEs. A total of 16 courses, each worth five credits, are offered in the first two years of the program. The detailed syllabus can be found here
Year 3: The student completes a year-long Pre-PhD Research in Mathematics course, which is worth 20 credits. This is typically conducted under the guidance of a faculty member, who is expected to be the student's PhD advisor. By the end of the third year, the student is required to write a research report, also worth 20 credits. Additionally, the student must take the following courses:
- Research Methodology (4 credits)
- Research and Publication Ethics (2 credits)
By the end of the third year, the student must pass the Candidacy Examination to register for a PhD
Candidacy Examination and Registration for PhD
The eligibility requirements to appear for a candidacy exam are:
- Having a potential PhD advisor
- Completion of 126 credits, including Research Methodology and Publication Ethics
- Having a CGPA of 5.5 or above.
The candidacy examination consists of a research presentation followed by a question/answer session before the Candidacy Examination Committee. The research presentation typically consists of background research material as well as potential research problems the student plans to pursue as part of their PhD work.
After passing the Candidacy Examination, the student can register for a PhD by applying to the Subject Board within 6 months. The application should contain the name of the proposed thesis adviser and a broad description of the topic of research intended to be pursued, and endorsed by the proposed thesis adviser. At the time of registration of PhD, a Thesis Monitoring Committee will be constituted.
The student is responsible for choosing a research topic and finding an advisor who matches their aptitude and interests. There is no formal procedure for drawing up research programs and assignments to advisers. The student is expected to develop a serious interest in a broad area of specialization by the end of their second year, and they are welcome to consult any faculty member at the Centre for suggestions. Any regular academic member of the School of Mathematics is eligible to be a student’s thesis adviser.

Years 4, 5, and 6:PhD work under the supervision of a faculty member.
Submission of PhD Synopsis and PhD Thesis
After the student completes their PhD research project(s), with the permission of the thesis adviser, the student forwards a synopsis of the thesis to the Subject Board, to obtain approval for submission of the synopsis to the TIFR Mumbai Graduate Studies Office. The same procedure will once again be followed to obtain approval for submission of their thesis. Once the Subject Board approves the submission of a synopsis/thesis, the rest of the process of submission and evaluation of the synopsis and thesis will be as per the guidelines prescribed by the Academic Council of TIFR.

Award of MSc Degree
A student is eligible to receive an MSc degree upon completing their PhD. However, if a student has not completed their PhD but has earned 120 credits (excluding the Research Methodology and Research and Publication Ethics courses), they may apply to the mathematics subject board for the award of an MSc degree.

Class for MSc degree
- CGPA 7.50 and above: First Class with Distinction
- CGPA 6.00 to 7.49: First Class

Calculation of Cumulative Grade Points Average
If a student has taken courses numbered as , which have Credits respectively and the Grade Points are in these courses, then the Cumulative Grade Points Average (CGPA) is where the sum in both numerator and denominator includes all the courses completed.
CGPA may be converted to percentage as [Percentage (%) = CGPA x 10].
Course Numbering
Courses are numbered in the format “ABC123.N” where ABC indicates the Subject Board offering the course, 123 is the course number, and N indicates the TIFR campus.

Integrated PhD Programme
TIFR Centre for Applicable Mathematics admits outstanding Bachelor's students to the Integrated PhD Programme in Mathematics.
Eligibility
Students holding a Bachelor's Degree with Mathematics as one of the main subjects or Engineering graduates with a strong aptitude for Mathematics are eligible to apply. Students who are in the final year of graduation may also apply.
Admission Procedure
Candidates wishing to enrol in the Integrated PhD programme at TIFR-CAM have to appear for the TIFR-GS written test in Mathematics at one of the several nationwide centres. Those who qualify the written test will be called for further evaluation and screening at TIFR-CAM.
Fellowship
Students are provided a monthly scholarship and an annual contingency grant for six years. In the first year, the monthly scholarship is ₹21,000 and the annual contingency grant is ₹25,000. The scholarship is enhanced to ₹31,000 per month and the annual contingency grant to ₹40,000 subject to satisfactory performance in the first year. Research Scholars, on successful registration for a PhD, will be entitled for a monthly scholarship of ₹35,000 and an annual contingency grant of ₹40,000 until the end of their sixth year.
