Campus Life

TIFR CAM consists of a kind and caring community. Over the years, CAM has developed a culture of respect and support. The relatively small strength helps us ensure that every voice is heard, and every student has a fair chance.

Accommodation

All students are provided accommodation in the hostel at a nominal cost. Masters students share a room with another student while PhD students get individual rooms. All rooms are fully furnished with a balcony, and an attached bathroom and toilet. The rooms are cleaned every day. The hostel is equipped with four washing machines which students can use free of charge. Some students opt to rent accommodation outside the campus in which case they will get house rent allowance.

Additionally, a separate space meant for working is allocated to each student. These rooms are air-conditioned, furnished with desks, blackboards, WiFi and LAN connection.

Computer Lab and IT facilities

The computer lab is air conditioned and has about 14 desktop computers running Linux. Most common scientific softwares like Python, Matlab, Mathematica are available for use by the members. The lab is open 24 hours a day and also provides printing facilities. There is high speed internet connection available in all rooms together with wireless internet. Students who need bigger computational facilities can access some workstations and parallel clusters of TIFR.

Library

The library has a collection of about 12000 books and 7490 journals in addition to online access, which are relevant to mathematics research, but also in other applied areas. Students can borrow books and journals without any restriction. The library is accessible 24 hours a day, and provides a quiet, comfortable space for students to work. The library also offers a variety of popular science books. There is a small Hindi, Bengali, and Marathi collection as well, and subscription to many newspapers and magazines.

The canteen provides breakfast, lunch and dinner on all days of the week at subsidized rates. Snacks, tea and coffee are available during office hours. The menu comprises both vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes which is decided by a committee of students and faculty.

Extra curricular activities

The Centre makes arrangements for students to engage in sports activities. Students actively participate in various games like football, cricket, badminton, table tennis, foosball, etc throughout the year, and organize events during the annual “Founder’s Day” programme. The Mandara gym, which is within the same compound as CAM, is accessible to all members. Moreover, students can also access the sports facilities in the NCBS campus, which is short buggy ride from CAM.

Movie buffs would love to know that the nearest multiplex at Garuda mall is minutes away by foot. Students often organise movie nights in the auditorium.

Students can also participate in the annual outreach program (SWIM), which gives them a unique opportunity to share their knowledge with an enthusiastic group of students.

Medical Facility

We strive to take care of the physical and mental well-being of everyone at CAM.

The Centre has hired the services of a doctor who visits twice a week (Tuesdays and Fridays) to cater to the medical needs of the students. In case of emergency and on remaining days of the week, students can consult the doctor over phone.

When the medicines are prescribed by the doctor, the claims of students are admitted up to a maximum of  Rs. 3000 (Rupees three thousand only) per student in a year. The maximum ceiling of reimbursement of claims for all students put together is Rs.100000. There is a provision to set off the unutilized amount of Rs.3000 by a student among the other students who need it subject to a maximum of Rs.100000.

In case of hospitalization, a medical claim policy has been taken by the Centre for Rs. 200000 per student.

Counseling Services: There is a counseling (talk therapy) facility available at no cost for the students.
