Abstract: The Indian summer monsoon is a multiscale event which is a result of interaction of multiple highly coupled physical processes. Not surprisingly then, modelling such a phenomenon is very challenging. We, in this work, present an empirical data driven approach to understand certain global characteristics of the spatio--temporal character of Indian summer monsoon rain. Specifically, we use Markov random field to build a discrete model of daily rainfall at 357 locations spread across the length and breadth of Indian subcontinent.
