COLLOQUIUM TALK
Title: The Debate on the Drivers of Tropical SST Patterns in a Warming World
Abstract: Tropical sea surface temperature (SST) patterns are pivotal for understanding future climate dynamics; however, their underlying drivers remain contentious. This talk will explore the ongoing debate surrounding these drivers. One perspective attributes discrepancies in tropical SST projections to how models simulate the forced response, which may lead to an underestimation of equatorial Pacific temperature changes. In contrast, another perspective emphasizes the significance of internal climate variability, suggesting that the observed strengthening of the equatorial Pacific SST gradient may arise from this variability rather than from external forcing. By examining these competing hypotheses, this talk will elucidate whether future tropical SST patterns are primarily influenced by model biases or intrinsic climate dynamics, carrying critical implications for climate sensitivity assessments and policy formulation.
Speaker Bio: Angshuman Modak is an Assistant Professor at the Centre for Climate Studies, IIT Bombay. His research focuses on climate change and variability, clouds, circulation, and climate feedbacks. He also investigates radiative forcing, aerosol-climate interactions, land-atmosphere processes, climate engineering, and emergent constraints on climate predictions, with a growing interest in applying AI to climate science. Before joining IIT Bombay, he worked as a Research Scientist at the Department of Meteorology (MISU), Stockholm University, Sweden.
