Abstract
In this talk we will describe how singular/eigen value gaps play a central role in the study of many interesting geometric objects. They are used to study certain nice connected components of representation varieties called the Hitchin components. They are also used to find properly discontinuous actions of finitely generated non-commutative free groups on vector spaces.
