Abstract:  Fiber-Reinforced continua with stiff reinforcements provide interesting challenges both from a theoretical mechanics and a mathematical analysis perspective. After an introduction to the mechanics of nematic elastomers, the theory is specialized to fiber-reinforced continua. We will then focus on specific simplified energies. Broadly, the presence of only certain gradients in the energy makes it hard to control oscillations or come up with suitable estimates. The dependence on boundary data will be illustrated through a simple example and some ideas for the analysis will be presented.
