Abstract:
In classical Abelian harmonic analysis there is a one-to-one correspondence between characters of a group and maximal ideals in the group algebra, and there is a useful analogue of this for "good" non-Abelian groups. But for the discrete Heisenberg group it fails quite spectacularly. We present a proof of this that relies on some clever but easy calculations and a minimal amount of abstract machinery.
