Abstract: A large class of planar random growth models are predicted to exhibit universal features of the so-called Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) class. Despite decades of work, however, rigorous progress has mostly been limited to a handful of models which have remarkable connections to different areas of probability such as random matrices and interacting particle systems, and are "exactly solvable". I shall discuss some of these connections and describe how these can be used to understand the large-scale geometry of some growth models in the KPZ class.
