Synopsis :

The lectures will discuss various equilibrium models for liquid crystals from the point of view of nonlinear analysis, with an emphasis on how theories with different order parameters provide different descriptions of defects.  Among topics discussed will be:

(i)                  The Oseen-Frank theory: existence and regularity, uniqueness of universal solutions, 2D exterior problems.

(ii)                 The Onsager and Landau - de Gennes theories: eigenvalue constraints and the singular potential, axisymmetry of solutions in the Onsager model.

(iii)               Wall defects and smectic thin films.

The course will not assume any prior knowledge of liquid crystals.

Lecture series will be  on September 5th, 7th,  9th, 14th and 16th at 4.00 pm and on  September 12th September 2022 at 11.00 am.
