Abstract:  Moving boundary problems constitute an important and challenging class of problems in engineering. We identify one critical question in their numerical simulation using finite element methods, namely, that of accommodating evolving boundaries and domains. We will describe algorithms designed to this end and demonstrate their performance with numerical experiments. We will also discuss the analysis of these algorithms, aimed at identifying sufficient conditions to guarantee their robustness.
