Abstract:  In this talk, we discuss on the finite element approximation of the convection-diffusion problem. It is well known that the standard Galerkin method does not provide a good numerical approximation for this problem if the convection is dominant. In the first part of the talk, we discuss on a mechanism to improve the approximation and subsequently some numerical methods that have arisen from this. In the second part of the talk, we discuss on a reliable and efficient a posterior error estimate for the adaptive mesh refinement algorithm.
