Abstract: We present some long standing open theoretical inverse problems for the wave equation, some partial results for these problems and perhaps some of the ideas in the derivation of these results. These problems consist of recovering the (non-constant) coefficients of the “wave equation”, such as the sound speed or the Riemannian metric, from the trace on the boundary of the solution of the PDE corresponding to a single point source or a single incoming plane wave. These problems arise in fields such as oil prospecting and medical imaging, but our talk will focus on the theoretical aspects of the problems.
